Linda Skeens Joins Tik Tok

You may or may not have heard the name Linda Skeens, but she won a bunch of blue ribbons at her local County Fair (and/or a State Fair) back in June, and even swept a few food categories.
Well, after making a few appearances on the talk show circuit she has recently joined Tik Tok to share some of her recipes.

Here's a screen shot and clip from her appearance on the Today Show back in July.

Wear Orange Weekend...

Hello. I don't know about you, but I am unwilling to accept some things as hopeless. Even that word bugs me. Let us choose to hope more, to do more. Look, nothing in life is perfect, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to make things better.
Anyway, let me get to the point. I am wearing orange today.

No excuses - grab a piece of paper, draw an orange "xo" or a heart or write
If you are curious enough:
Now, since my steady gig involves gift wrapping, I will wear an orange ribbon today. Tomorrow, on my day off the day gig, I will wear my Plant t-shirt, because by some stroke of fate, the awesome designer switched the logo colors to orange so it would show up better against the super soft faded black vintage look fabric. Maybe this is the cosmic reason why? All I know is, it is time to do something more about this plague of violence that is robbing innocents of many years of their lives, and many more of the freedom to move about this country.
Wearing orange shows solidarity -- maybe we should keep wearing it until some sensible legislation is passed.
It's long past time.

World Central Kitchen

Without getting into the politics of it all, I am sharing this link for readers who are upset and frustrated about what is happening between Russia and Ukraine right now. We give what we can until we can give more.

Sending best wishes out to everyone. May we all find love and healing, so that we will stop harming ourselves and each other. Be love.

Blum's Coffee Crunch Cake Recipe

I haven't tried this yet, but a recent request on Nextdoor prompted a search, which yielded two recipes.

One recipe is from The SF Chronicle - cut and pasted below, and another is a re-creation from the "Sweet" book, which follows at the bottom of this post.

Reading the article, I found out the original creator of the cake was a man called Ernest Weil, who wrote a book that included the original recipe. This led to the discovery of several new copies of Mr. Weil's book, each at the cost of $300+ and a website that offers a downloadable pdf version for a $25.00 donation to any of the non-profits listed on their website.

Origin of The Jack O' Lantern, and "What's a Turnip Got to Do With It?"

Did you know why we carve pumpkins for Halloween, and why they are called Jack O' Lanterns?

Well, it turns out that the tradition comes from old Irish folklore about some trickster name Jack, and the original lanterns were carved from a turnip (or a potato, or the nearest root vegetable.)

When Irish immigrants came to America, they brought the tradition along while rejoicing in the more easily carved indigenous fruit - the pumpkin!

Added bonus, yummy seeds for midnight snacking...

The original jack o' lanterns bear little resemblance to some of the amazing sculptures found these days. (Pumpkin sculpture by Ray Villafane. )

A Story With Heart

When stories are shared, it is best to be on the side of kindness. If you have a few moments, it's an interesting thread.
